Small skirmishes tend to play out in one of two ways, either your outnumbered or the enemy have a special reason to believe they will win (remote repping for example) and they engage. Or they will bail due to being outgunned or outnumbered.
In the latter situation your priority is to get tackle and take out those who cannot leave, if they stay and fight then you need to adapt your primary based on what you face. A general rule of thumb however in small skirmishes would be to take out the highest damage dealers first, and work down from there.
In fleet combat it tends to be a bit more straight forward, assign complicated tasks such as dealing with enemy ecm boats to your support before you begin the engagement then call targets for your battleships as follows.
Three principles need to be considered when calling battleship targets in large fleet engagements.
Closest First... The closest ships are in range of the most amount of your guns, therefore will drop quickly.
Damage vs Hitpoints... Not all battleships are built the same, take the highest damage dealers with the lowest potential hitpoints first. In most cases this would be Tempests, followed by Megathrons. Avoid calling ships with low slot configurations which allow for a ton of plates, for example the Apoc and Abaddon. After the high damage bs are gone you can move onto the low damage/short range bs. Domi's, Phoons and ravens are battleships which can be left till later unless they get in close range.
Not aligned dear? Always primary battleships which have no speed on your overview, they are prob not aligned. It can take around 20-25seconds for a plated bs to align, longer with rigs and lag, at which point it will be a wreck.
Thats not everything you need to know, but it will give you a good idea to be getting on with. You need to pick the targets which are closest to fitting the three criteria above, however when lag kicks in and it all goes to hell, you will be just calling whatever the hell you can see through the lag!
